What is Digital Imaging & Publishing Technology?

Digital imaging and publishing is part of the broad graphic communications industry. People who work in digital imaging and publishing careers produce the millions of photographic, print and digital media products used every day by individuals and businesses. Digital technology enables a multi-purposing of data, text, and graphics to meet the demand for publishing through a wide variety of information dissemination and communication strategies, including printed pages, World Wide Web pages, and CD- ROM. This program can get you ready for an exciting and challenging career in the nation's second largest and fastest growing manufacturing industry.

You may choose from the following: a Diploma, an Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) degree, or an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.

Depending on your individual program concentration, you may become a:

  • computer systems applications specialist
  • digital image capture and image preparation technician
  • digital or conventional prepress technician
  • digital printing systems operator, a printing press operator
  • small bindery/finishing technician
  • advanced custom color printer technician
  • custom copy technician
  • custom color printer
  • custom color print inspector/evaluator
  • film processing technician
  • media production technician
  • photographic laboratory technician
  • presentation graphics technician
  • television production technician

You may work in:

  • commercial printing plants
  • pre-press and color trade shop companies
  • in-plant printing departments
  • book and magazine printers
  • newspaper facilities
  • government printing facilities
  • custom or commercial photographic labs
  • in-house industrial photographic labs
  • industrial training or media departments
  • imaging production houses

How long will it take me to earn a diploma, A.O.S., or A.A.S. degree?

  • Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree: about 8 quarters including one cooperative work experience
  • Associate in Occupational Studies (A.O.S.) degree: about 8 quarters including one cooperative work experience
  • Diploma: about 5 quarters

What do I need to enter this program?

All NTID programs have entry criteria. Entry criteria are academic standards that the student must satisfy in order to be accepted into a program. Entry Criteria are different for the different degree levels: A.A.S, A.O.S, and Diploma Program Entry Criteria.


The entry criteria are in these academic categories:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Technical program

Entry criteria must be satisfied in all four categories.


DIPT Entry Criteria

The DIPT program has Entry Criteria for the A.A.S. and A.O.S. degrees and for the Diploma program


The English entry criteria varies for each DIPT degree option:

  • A.A.S. - placement into the College of Liberal Arts course sequence
  • A.O.S. - placement into “C” level NTID English for non-fiction reading, academic writing, and literature
  • Diploma - placement into “B” level NTID English for non-fiction reading, academic writing, and literature


The Math, Science, and technical entry criteria are the same for each DIPT degree option

  • Math: placement into “B” level NTID mathematics course
  • Science: placement into “B” level NTID science course
  • Technical: completion of sampling experience or a direct admission process

 

DIPT Program Affiliation

Some students may be very close to meeting the program entry criteria. These students may need only one or two quarters of additional study in order to fully satisfy the entry criteria. Students who are very close to meeting entry criteria may be accepted as “Affiliated” to the program.

What other degrees does RIT offer related to Digital Imaging & Publishing Technology?

After you complete your A.A.S. degree in Digital Imaging & Publishing Technology, you may apply to RIT's College of Imaging Arts and Sciences to earn your bachelor degree in one of several related programs. You may continue your education to earn a masters degree in one of several colleges at RIT.
